JATE Klub is more than a nightspot: it is a key stage of the cultural and community life of the Szeged university crowd, and it has shaped the life of the city for decades.

The favourite haunt of Szeged's university students opened its doors in March 1973 as the club of József Attila University. By the mid-1980s it had grown into a culture and entertainment hub known across the country.

The cellar club — converted from an air-raid shelter — sits in downtown Szeged, in the basement of the University of Szeged's main building, a sign of just how organic a part of student life it is.

By day it runs as a café; by night it hosts faculty parties, concerts, countless DJs, cultural programmes, theatre and poetry nights, and folk dance evenings.

For bigger events the club can host up to 800 people across three different spaces, each offering a different musical style for the night.
